ZURICH, Switzerland – ABB has signed contracts to engineer and construct the world’s largest shore power project at the Port of Rotterdam.
The installations, scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2028, will service three major container terminals and aim to significantly reduce emissions and noise pollution.
What is new?
ABB has signed contracts with Rotterdam Shore Power (RSP), a joint venture by the Port of Rotterdam and energy company Eneco, to engineer and construct shore power systems for the Port of Rotterdam. The contracts were booked in December 2025, and the agreement includes a multi-year service agreement for each terminal involved. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Project Scope and Impact
The project will deliver a combined capacity of more than 100 megavolt-amperes (MVA), making it the largest shore power system in the world to date. The installations will provide power at 35 connection points across three container terminals: APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, Hutchison Ports ECT Delta, and Hutchison Ports ECT Euromax. This capacity will allow up to 32 container ships to connect to shore power simultaneously.
By allowing vessels to shut down their engines while berthed, the project is expected to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 96,000 metric tons from 2030. The use of shore power will also eliminate engine noise and significantly improve local air quality.
Key Details and Timeline
ABB will be responsible for the design, delivery, installation, commissioning, and testing of the prefabricated shore power systems. The company will also supply its supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for monitoring, control, and energy usage tracking. The project is scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2028.
Regulatory Context
The installations will support compliance with the FuelEU Maritime Regulation. The legislation requires all container and passenger ships above 5,000 gross tonnage to use onshore power supply or an equivalent zero-emission technology in European Union ports starting from January 1, 2030.
