Vienna, Austria – October 9, 2024 – Austrian Post has just launched a limited-edition stamp that could only have come from a country famous for its beer culture. Priced at €3.50 (around $3.50 USD), this isn’t just any stamp—it’s also a fully functional beer coaster. As part of the company’s continued tradition of using unconventional materials for its philatelic products, the new stamp is both a collectible and a conversation piece.

Designed by David Gruber, the stamp’s central motif is a frothy glass of beer. Around the edges, you’ll find playful “nutritional information” in a nod to food labels, while the beer foam is brought to life with textured bubbles created through a special relief varnish. This added dimension gives the stamp a tactile quality, enhancing the interactive experience. Perforated in the middle, the stamp can be separated from the coaster, which remains usable under drinks.

The stamp is made from genuine wood pulp board, commonly used for traditional beer coasters, and measures 1.4 millimeters in thickness. At an event held tomorrow at Vienna’s Prater park, Austrian Post will officially unveil this unique philatelic item. The first-day-of-issue event is set for the “Wiener Kaiser Wien” pavilion and will feature a special round postmark shaped like a beer bottle cap with the phrase, “Bier hat’s in sich!” or “Beer has it in it!”

Celebrating Austrian Culture, One Stamp at a Time

Austrian Post is no stranger to using unique materials for stamps. Past designs have incorporated items such as porcelain, ski fabric, toilet paper, and even FFP2 mask material. This approach has made Austrian Post a trendsetter in philatelic circles, drawing collectors from all over the world who are eager to get their hands on its latest creations. The new beer coaster stamp is no exception, combining the country’s love for beer with its ingenuity in stamp design.

New Leadership, New Traditions

This beer coaster stamp also marks one of the first major product launches under the leadership of CEO Walter Oblin, who took over on October 1, 2024. Oblin has promised to maintain Austrian Post’s tradition of pushing the boundaries of what a stamp can be, focusing on products that resonate with local culture while appealing to international collectors.

Called to Vienna, the new CFO

This limited-edition beer coaster stamp, produced in a run of 150,000 copies, is expected to become a sought-after item both in Austria and among philatelists worldwide. As Austrian Post continues to merge everyday objects with philatelic art, it stands as a testament to Austria’s rich cultural heritage and its forward-thinking postal service. So, if you find yourself in Austria, consider grabbing this innovative keepsake—it’s the perfect way to celebrate the country’s enduring love for a good beer.
