ESSEN, Germany — E.ON and BYD announced a strategic partnership to provide intelligent energy and mobility solutions to customers across Europe. The collaboration aims to integrate electric vehicles into the energy system and advance the energy transition. E.ON said in an emailed press release today that the partnership combines its expertise in energy supply, smart charging, and flexibility management with BYD’s position as a leading manufacturer of electric vehicles and battery technologies. The first joint offer will launch in Germany in November 2026, with a gradual expansion into additional European markets.

Initial German Offer

The initial customer offer in Germany combines the purchase or leasing of a fully electric BYD vehicle with a smart electricity contract from E.ON. This offer will be available for all fully electric BYD models. Customers can reduce their monthly vehicle leasing costs by up to €20 by using intelligent charging functions. E.ON will automatically optimize the charging process and reward flexible electricity use through a bonus scheme.

Market Context and Expansion

The European electric mobility market is growing rapidly, with an estimated 10 to 11 million battery-electric vehicles currently on the roads. This number could increase to between 40 and 50 million vehicles by 2030. This growth increases the need to integrate electric vehicles into the energy system. Marc Spieker, Chief Operating Officer Commercial at E.ON SE, stated the partnership aims to make the benefits of intelligent energy and charging solutions accessible to more people. Patrick Schulz, Deputy Country Manager and Commercial Director at BYD Germany, said the collaboration seeks to make the switch to an electric car simple, smart, and more affordable for customers. E.ON and BYD plan to gradually expand their offerings to additional European markets. They also intend to enhance the digital customer experience, including seamless integration of services into apps and the use of new technologies.

Future Flexibility Solutions

The partnership will also focus on testing and scaling further flexibility solutions for the mass market. This includes the wider adoption of bidirectional charging, known as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G). V2G technology allows electric vehicles to function as flexible energy storage assets within the energy system. E.ON already offers its Home Comfort platform, which connects, manages, and optimizes energy flows within a home, including wallboxes, battery storage systems, and heat pumps. BYD vehicles will be integrated into the E.ON Home Comfort platform, allowing customers to manage their vehicle and smart charging functions through a single digital environment. These solutions can help integrate renewable energy more effectively, reduce overall system costs, and provide additional savings potential for customers.
