  • Amazon and Holcim invest in startups 14Trees and Paebbl to advance sustainable building.
  • 14Trees focuses on 3D printing for low-carbon buildings, while Paebbl’s technology turns CO₂ into a carbon sink in concrete.

Wed Oct 09 16:02:16 -0000 2024 UTC– Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund and Switzerland’s Holcim invest in startups 14Trees and Paebbl for sustainable building, advancing technologies like 3D printing and CO₂ storage in concrete.

Holcim emphasizes pushing sustainable building boundaries, while 14Trees and Paebbl welcome the investments to scale their technologies. Holcim and BII established 14Trees in 2016, focusing on sustainable construction solutions in Africa, while Paebbl converts CO₂ into a carbon store.

Holcim aims to build progress for people and the planet with innovative solutions, the company said.

The news of the joint investment comes on the heels of a similar invest earlier today.

Heidelberg Cement Invest in Canadian Start-up

Germany-based Heidelberg Materials, a global leader in building materials, has announced an investment in EnviCore, a Canadian clean-tech startup specializing in low-carbon solutions. This collaboration aims to leverage EnviCore’s proprietary technology to reprocess recycled construction and demolition waste into high-quality secondary cementitious materials (SCMs). SCMs are essential in sustainable construction practices, as they can replace a portion of clinker, the most carbon-intensive component of cement and concrete.

Advancing Circularity in Construction Materials

EnviCore’s innovative approach involves a dry thermochemical process to convert construction and demolition waste into SCMs. These SCMs serve as an environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional clinker, allowing for up to a 25% replacement in cement mixes.

By adopting EnviCore’s technology, Heidelberg Materials reinforces its commitment to circularity and resource conservation in its production processes. This aligns with the company’s target of offering 50% circular alternatives in its concrete products by 2030.
