Duesseldorf, Germany — The German government has commissioned Rheinmetall, a leading defense contractor, to deliver an additional 20 Marder infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to Ukraine, the company said Tuesday. This order, placed in March 2024, extends the company’s support to Ukraine and is valued in the mid double-digit million Euro range. Rheinmetall will schedule the delivery of these vehicles within the year 2024.

Previously, Rheinmetall had already delivered a significant number of Marder IFVs to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. These deliveries were made through direct transactions and circular exchange programs. The Marder IFVs, known for their efficiency and precision in target elimination, feature integrated laser range finders.

Rheinmetall acquired these 1A3 Marder IFVs from the Bundeswehr and started their overhaul in the spring of 2022, shouldering the initial costs. The overhaul work for immediate deployment is being carried out at Rheinmetall’s facilities in Unterluess and Kassel.

The Marder IFV, a proven weapon system, has been a part of the Bundeswehr and has seen multiple modernizations over its service life. Meanwhile, the Bundeswehr is gradually phasing out the Marder IFVs, shifting to more than 300 Puma IFVs, which represent the latest generation of combat vehicles. An additional lot of over 50 Pumas was also ordered in 2023.
