- Anglo American partners with Chinese market leaders for polyhalite fertilizer.
August 30 2024 07:17:14 UTC– Anglo American has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with two of China’s top fertilizer companies, Sinochem Fertilizer and BeiFeng AMP, to develop and promote the use of polyhalite in the Chinese market. This collaboration aims to enhance the adoption of low carbon, soil-friendly fertilizers and set new product standards within China.
This partnership matters because it represents a strategic move by Anglo American to tap into China’s vast and growing agricultural market, one of the largest in the world. By collaborating with Sinochem Fertilizer and BeiFeng AMP, Anglo American gains access to a distribution network that covers nearly the entirety of China’s arable land, enhancing its ability to promote and sell polyhalite, a mineral used in low-carbon, soil-friendly fertilizers.
Sinochem Fertilizer, part of Syngenta Group, is China’s largest distributor of agricultural inputs, with operations reaching 95% of the country’s arable land. BeiFeng AMP, the third largest distributor, plays a critical role in the northeastern provinces, known as China’s “grain barn.
In a broader context, this collaboration supports global efforts to advance sustainable agriculture. The focus on low-carbon and soil-friendly fertilizers aligns with global environmental goals, such as reducing the carbon footprint of agriculture and improving soil health. Given China’s significant role in global food production, the successful adoption of polyhalite could have far-reaching effects on agricultural practices worldwide.
Furthermore, the establishment of polyhalite product standards and the potential for large-scale demonstrations could position Anglo American as a leader in sustainable fertilizers, not just in China, but globally. This partnership thus represents both a commercial opportunity and a contribution to global sustainability initiatives.

The agreements will focus on advancing the development and commercialization of polyhalite, particularly through joint large-scale demonstrations and further research on key crops such as corn, soybean, potato, rice, and high-value fruits like apples and citrus. These efforts will build on extensive crop trials previously conducted by Anglo American and are expected to bolster regional sales opportunities, marketing strategies, and supply arrangements.
This partnership marks a significant step in Anglo American’s strategy to introduce sustainable agricultural practices and products in one of the world’s largest and most critical agricultural markets. The collaboration is also seen as a move towards establishing a stronger presence in China’s fertilizer industry by promoting innovative and environmentally responsible farming solutions.
