• Rheinmetall develops new electrode technology for hydrogen production
DÜSSELDORF, Germany – German technology group Rheinmetall announced on January 7, 2026, the successful development of a new electrode technology for hydrogen production.
The company stated that preparations for pilot production are now underway and scheduled to begin in 2027.
What is new?
Rheinmetall has concluded a research project resulting in an innovative electrode technology designed for alkaline electrolysis, a key process in producing hydrogen. The company’s subsidiary, KS Gleitlager GmbH, led the project and has initiated preparations to begin pilot production of the new technology at its St. Leon-Rot site next year.
Background
The development was part of the ‘E2ngel’ project, a consortium led by Rheinmetall over the past three years. The project, funded within Germany’s National Hydrogen Strategy, also included the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and McPhy Energy Germany as partners. Its objective was to increase the power density and efficiency of water electrolysis for producing green hydrogen using catalysts free of noble metals.
Key Details
According to the company, the new technology is expected to make electrolyser systems more powerful and efficient, potentially doubling power density or improving efficiency by over 10%. This improvement is achieved without the use of expensive and critical precious metals. Rheinmetall noted that the project’s goals for cell voltage and current density were surpassed during validation tests conducted by its partners, DLR and McPhy Energy Germany.
Impact and Next Steps
Rheinmetall is now preparing for series production. A pilot production line, designed for electrode dimensions of up to two metres suitable for multi-megawatt electrolyser systems, is scheduled to start at the St. Leon-Rot site in 2027. Dr. Klaus Pucher, CEO of the responsible business unit, stated the development will contribute to a sustainable energy transition and help reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels for Germany and Europe.
