Paris Prosecutor Opens Investigation into Deadly New Year’s Fire in Switzerland

PARIS, France – The Paris Prosecutor’s Office announced on January 5 that it has opened a “mirror” investigation following a deadly fire in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, that killed nine French nationals on New Year’s night.

The procedure aims to support French victims and their families as Swiss authorities conduct the primary investigation.

What is new?

The Paris Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a parallel legal procedure, known as a “mirror” investigation, concerning the fatal fire at the “Le Constellation” establishment in Switzerland. The announcement was made via a press release on Monday, January 5, 2026. This French investigation is designed to provide a central point of contact for the French citizens affected and to facilitate their interactions with the ongoing Swiss-led inquiry.

Background of the Incident

A fire occurred at an establishment named “Le Constellation” in the resort town of Crans-Montana, Switzerland, during the night of New Year’s 2026. The incident resulted in numerous casualties, including a significant number of French citizens who were present at the location.

Victims and Support

According to the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the fire has resulted in the deaths of nine French citizens, including several minors. The youngest victim was reportedly 14 years old. An additional 23 French nationals were injured, some with very severe injuries.

To assist the victims and their families, the France Victimes federation has been mobilized by the prosecutor’s office to offer psychological and legal support.

Jurisdiction and Investigation Details

Swiss authorities retain primary jurisdiction to investigate the circumstances of the fire and to determine any responsibility. The French “mirror” procedure, handled by the “collective accidents” division of the Paris Prosecutor’s Office, is not intended to replace the Swiss investigation but to supplement it. The French National Directorate of the Judicial Police, specifically its Central Office for the Repression of Violence against Persons (OCRVP), has been tasked with carrying out this procedure.
