DÜSSELDORF, Germany – The German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) has placed an order for 30mm ammunition worth several hundred million euros with defense contractor Rheinmetall.

The procurement is part of an extended framework contract to supply munitions for Germany’s Puma infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).

What is new?

Rheinmetall announced that the Bundeswehr placed a new order for 30mm ammunition as part of a recently extended framework contract. This specific call-off is valued at several hundred million euros and involves a medium six-figure quantity of cartridges for the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. The procurement is intended to replenish military stockpiles and increase ammunition reserves in response to the current security situation.

Contract Details

The original framework contract between the Bundeswehr and Rheinmetall was signed in December 2022. It has now been expanded in both delivery quantity and total value, with the agreement now running until 2029. The extended contract provides for the delivery of several hundred thousand cartridges and is worth a total of around €1 billion.

Ammunition and Technology

The ammunition is designed for the Puma IFV’s MK30-2/ABM (Airburst Munition) machine gun, which has an effective range of over 2,000 metres. Rheinmetall will supply two types of 30 mm x 173 calibre combat ammunition: the KE DM33 and the programmable KE-TF DM21 (Kinetic Energy Time Fuse). The KE-TF ammunition is designed to engage larger soft and semi-hard surface targets, as well as drones.

Strategic Context

This ammunition order supports the German Armed Forces’ recent commission to procure 200 additional Puma IFVs from joint venture partners Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland. The move to increase ammunition reserves underscores efforts by the armed forces to bolster defense capabilities. The order also solidifies Rheinmetall’s position as a key supplier of medium-calibre ammunition to the Bundeswehr.
