SINGAPORE — STMicroelectronics and the National University of Singapore (NUS) have launched a new corporate laboratory. The ST–NUS HELIX Corporate Lab is a four-year strategic research initiative. It aims to advance next-generation edge artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
STMicroelectronics said in an emailed press release today that the lab will enable new generative and embodied AI use cases at the edge. This will happen through system-to-silicon innovation. HELIX stands for Hardware for Embodied Low-power Intelligent Xcceleration.
Research Focus
The Corporate Lab will focus on several key research areas. These include memory-centric architectures, innovative in-memory computing, and scalable compute-and-memory systems. It will also explore advanced silicon and embedded-memory technologies.
The program integrates NUS’s research with STMicroelectronics’ expertise in semiconductor technology and system development. STMicroelectronics will provide NUS with a dedicated design chassis. This chassis uses its proprietary P18 18nm Fully Depleted Silicon On Insulator (FD-SOI) technology. This platform aims to accelerate the translation of research into scalable semiconductor solutions.
Strategic Importance
The Corporate Lab is supported under Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 plan (RIE2025). It is hosted at NUS’s College of Design and Engineering. The School of Computing at NUS also participates.
NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye stated the lab is a testament to industry-academia partnerships. He said it will help define the future of Singapore’s semiconductor and AI industries. Laurent Malier, Executive Vice President of Global Technology R&D at STMicroelectronics, noted the lab will explore differentiated AI computing technologies.
The initiative aims to strengthen Singapore’s advanced semiconductor research capabilities. It will also support the development of future edge AI talent and innovation. Ms Low Yen Ling, Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and Ministry of Trade and Industry, officially launched the lab.
