Wiesbaden, Germany — During the asparagus season, a not inconsiderable proportion of the asparagus consumed in consumed in this country does not come from local fields, but from abroad, the Federal Statistics Office said Tuesday.
Last year, 19,300 tons of the stalked vegetable were imported to Germany fresh or chilled last year – a good 2% less than in 2022.
The vast majority (86%) was imported imported from March to June, when farmers in Germany also offer their asparagus for sale. The most important country of origin was Greece with a 28% share of asparagus imports, followed by Spain with 27%, Italy with Italy with 18 %, Mexico with 9 % and Peru with 7 %. Comparatively little asparagus is exported from Germany: 3,200 tons in 2023.
