Germany-based Heidelberg Materials, a global leader in building materials, has announced an investment in EnviCore, a Canadian clean-tech startup specializing in low-carbon solutions. This collaboration aims to leverage EnviCore’s proprietary technology to reprocess recycled construction and demolition waste into high-quality secondary cementitious materials (SCMs). SCMs are essential in sustainable construction practices, as they can replace a portion of clinker, the most carbon-intensive component of cement and concrete.
Advancing Circularity in Construction Materials
EnviCore’s innovative approach involves a dry thermochemical process to convert construction and demolition waste into SCMs. These SCMs serve as an environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional clinker, allowing for up to a 25% replacement in cement mixes.
By adopting EnviCore’s technology, Heidelberg Materials reinforces its commitment to circularity and resource conservation in its production processes. This aligns with the company’s target of offering 50% circular alternatives in its concrete products by 2030.
The companies will conduct a feasibility study to assess the effectiveness of EnviCore’s technology in an industrial setting. Pending positive results, a pilot SCM production facility may be developed at a Heidelberg Materials recycling hub.
This facility would enable Heidelberg Materials to test the scalability of EnviCore’s technology, optimizing SCM production and further reducing its carbon footprint. Additionally, Heidelberg Materials has taken a minority stake in EnviCore, underscoring its commitment to advancing circular technologies in the construction industry.
By scaling up the use of SCMs, Heidelberg Materials aims to contribute to low-carbon construction solutions and accelerate the transition to sustainable building practices across its global operations.
