- EU Mandates 90% of New City Buses to be CO2-Neutral by 2030

Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany — The coming decade is expected to witness a substantial rise in the significance of bus travel globally, Daimler Buses said Monday.
OECD Projections
It cited the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) projects an approximately 10% increase in demand for bus transport across Europe and Latin America from pre-pandemic levels in 2019 to the year 2030.
This anticipated growth is primarily attributed to the expanding public local transportation sector, especially within city boundaries.
New EU Rules
In a significant environmental policy move, the European Union has implemented new regulations from the start of 2024 to combat climate change. These stipulate that from 2030 onwards, a minimum of 90% of all new city bus acquisitions by fleet operators must be locally CO2-neutral.
This bold directive complements the broader EU agenda to reduce CO2 emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals.
Daimler Buses, a key player in the transport sector, started the production of electrically powered city buses in 2018 and aims to extend this to intercity e-buses by the mid-2020s and electrified coaches by 2030.
e-drivetrains, e-buses
Daimler Buses also plans to synchronize the e-drivetrain, components, and technologies of its e-buses with the electrically powered trucks of the Daimler Truck Group. This strategic integration is anticipated not only to streamline production but also to significantly contribute to the company’s profitability.
As the world transitions to more sustainable modes of transportation, the focus on locally CO2-neutral vehicles, particularly in the bus sector, is poised to redefine public transport systems.
