Wiesbaden, Germany — Vegetable harvest in Germany increased by 4% in 2023 compared to 2022, with organic farming showing an 11% rise.
Total vegetable production was 3.9 million tons from 5,970 farms on 122,800 hectares, a 3% decrease in land used for cultivation.
As in previous years, the largest harvest volume in Germany in 2023 was achieved by vegetable growers with the cultivation of carrots at a good 796,700 tons (+2% compared to the previous year).
The vegetable type with the second-largest harvest volume was again onions. At 666,300 tons (+15% compared to 2022), this was the largest harvest volume since 2012.
White cabbage was in third place with 398,500 tons (+4%) despite a further decline in the area under cultivation, followed by gherkins with 193,700 tons (+15%) and iceberg lettuce with 121,200 tons (-13%).
