• UPDATE: Rheinmetall Opens New Hybrid Plant in Szeged, Hungary for Civil and Military Production
SZEGED, Hungary – German technology group Rheinmetall has opened a new hybrid manufacturing plant in Szeged, a facility that will produce components for both civilian and military applications.
The inauguration ceremony for the now-operational site took place on December 12, 2025.
What is new?
Rheinmetall has officially opened a new production facility in Szeged, southern Hungary, marking its first major hybrid plant outside of Germany. The site combines the company’s civil and defense manufacturing activities under one roof. An opening ceremony on December 12, 2025, was attended by Hungarian Foreign and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó and other officials. The plant is now operational and is jointly managed by Rheinmetall’s Power Systems and Electronic Solutions divisions.
Investment and Scope
Rheinmetall has invested more than €34 million in the new plant, with a planned total investment of €69 million to expand production capacity in Szeged. This investment, which includes various assembly lines for electromobility components, is supported by the Hungarian government through the Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency (HIPA). The project is expected to create over 300 jobs for highly skilled workers by 2030, with more than 60 positions already filled.
Constructed in approximately 16 months, the factory has a floor space of over 15,000 square metres on a total area of 84,000 square metres, with potential for further expansion. The facility also includes a 3,850-square-metre warehouse with capacity for around 3,500 pallet spaces.
Strategic Importance
The new hybrid site will focus on manufacturing products for the e-mobility and hydrogen sectors, supported by production for the truck combustion engine market. Rheinmetall is also establishing production of electronic components for military systems at the location. “This is Rheinmetall’s first hybrid location outside Germany. It primarily manufactures components that are particularly important in conventional and electric vehicles as well as in power plants for generating renewable energy. This could make Hungary one of Europe’s most important centres for future technologies,” stated Péter Szíjjártó, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Christoph Müller, CEO of Rheinmetall’s Power Systems division, described Hungary as a “home market” for the company. “Hungary and Rheinmetall are linked not only by a successful partnership, but also by a bond of profound cooperation and strong trust,” he explained, noting the combination of civil and military technologies at the new site.
