UPDATE: German Armed Forces Order 84 RCH155 Wheeled Howitzers in €1.2 Billion Deal

DÜSSELDORF, Germany – The German Armed Forces placed an order on December 19, 2025, for 84 RCH155 wheeled howitzers from Artec GmbH, a joint venture involving Rheinmetall.

The initial order is valued at approximately €1.2 billion and includes training equipment and logistical support.

What is new?

The German Armed Forces will introduce the RCH155 wheeled howitzer into service, placing an order for an initial 84 systems. The contract was awarded to Artec GmbH, a joint venture between KNDS Germany and Rheinmetall, by Germany’s Federal Office of Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw). This order is the first call-off from a framework agreement that provides for a total of up to 500 RCH155 systems, which can also be procured by other nations.

Contract Details

The order value for the first 84 howitzers, along with associated services, is approximately €1.2 billion. As part of the arrangement, Rheinmetall is contracted to supply the 155 mm weapon systems, electrical systems, and software to Artec GmbH. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in 2027 and are expected to be completed in 2029. Artec GmbH is a joint venture between KNDS Germany and Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH and is responsible for the Boxer vehicle family, which serves as the chassis for the RCH155.

System Capabilities and Context

The RCH 155 is a protected wheeled howitzer that combines the firepower of an automatic and remotely controlled artillery gun module (AGM) with the mobility and protection of the Boxer wheeled armored vehicle. The system is capable of firing while moving and can engage targets with high precision at distances of up to 40 kilometers. Due to a high degree of automation, the crew is reduced to two soldiers.

Ukraine is the first user nation, having ordered 54 RCH155s directly from KNDS Germany. The United Kingdom has also stated its intent to procure the system, following a cooperation agreement announced in April 2024.
