UPDATE: DHL and CMA CGM accelerate decarbonization of ocean freight with joint biofuel initiative

BONN, Germany – Logistics company DHL Group and shipping line CMA CGM have agreed to a joint biofuel initiative to reduce ocean freight emissions, the companies announced on December 22, 2025.

The partnership involves the use of 8,990 metric tons of second-generation biofuel, projected to cut approximately 25,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions.

What is new?

DHL Group and CMA CGM have entered into an agreement to jointly use 8,990 metric tons of second-generation biofuel made from Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester (UCOME). The initiative is designed to reduce the carbon footprint of ocean freight transported under DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, with an estimated well-to-wake emission reduction of 25,000 metric tons of CO2e.

Key Details

Under the agreement, CMA CGM will physically bunker the biofuel across its shipping fleet.

This action supports DHL’s “Book & Claim” approach, which is part of its GoGreen Plus service. This service allows DHL customers to select sustainable marine fuel options for their shipments, enabling a reduction of up to 80% in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional maritime fuels.

The collaboration utilizes CMA CGM’s ACT+ low-carbon transport offering, which allows shippers to integrate sustainable maritime transport solutions into their logistics operations.

Context and Ambitions

Both companies have stated a shared goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Olivier Nivoix, Executive Vice President of Shipping for the CMA CGM Group, commented on the partnership’s role in accelerating the industry’s shift to low-carbon shipping. “ACT+ offers reliable and scalable solutions backed by our fleet designed for alternative fuels,” Nivoix said.

CMA CGM reports it has already reduced the carbon intensity of its shipping activities by 57% since 2008 and is investing in alternative fuels and dual-fuel vessels. The two companies plan to continue exploring opportunities to increase the use of lower-carbon fuels and develop new collaborative methods for decarbonizing international supply chains.
