700,000 educational pros support German kids everyday

WIESBADEN – The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports a 51% increase in kindergarten staff in Germany over the past decade. As of March 2023, the number of educational professionals in kindergartens reached approximately 702,200, compared to 465,000 in 2013. This increase coincides with the legal entitlement to kindergarten for children aged one to three years introduced a decade ago.

The rise in educational staff parallels a 22% growth in kindergarten enrolment, from 3.21 million children in 2013 to 3.93 million in 2023. The most notable growth is in the under-three age group, which saw a 43% increase. This data underscores the expanding demand for early childhood education in Germany and reflects a broader European emphasis on enhancing kindergarten services.

The notable increase in both childcare staff and the number of children in care comes at a crucial time when the demand for quality early childhood education is rising.
