Private households in Germany have reduced their CO2 emissions from heating by 12% over the past 20 years. In 2021, approximately 147 million tons of CO2 were emitted for heating purposes, compared to nearly 167 million tons in 2001.

This decrease can be attributed to a shift from oil to cleaner energy sources such as gas, district heating, and electricity, as well as an increase in the use of renewable energy for heating. Additionally, there has been a decrease in energy consumption for heating by almost 13% between 2001 and 2021.
