Frankfurt, Germany —In a speech held Wednesday by Piero Cipollone, a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB), the lender of last resort said it was “searching for possible providers to develop a digital euro platform and infrastructure”. The speech discussed the ECB’s efforts to prepare for the introduction of a digital euro while ensuring that people’s freedom to use a public means of payment is preserved.
ECB’s Piero Cipollone told the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs of the European Parliament on the development of the Digital Euro:
Let me be clear: we are not launching any of the development work now. Instead, we want to establish framework agreements that could be used in the coming years to develop the relevant components if the decision to launch the digital euro is taken.
