Landsec reports retail sales outperformed UK market by 5% during Golden Quarter

LONDON, UK – Landsec announced on January 19 that its retail destinations achieved a 4.9% year-on-year sales increase during the 2025 “Golden Quarter,” outperforming the national retail benchmark.

The company also reported a 0.7% rise in footfall across its major shopping centres and outlets, contrasting with a decline in the wider market.

What is new?

In a performance update for the key holiday shopping period, Landsec detailed sales and footfall figures that exceeded national averages. Total sales across its portfolio rose by 4.9% compared to the same period last year, while the national retail benchmark recorded a 0.2% decline. During the three peak Christmas shopping weeks, sales were up 6.5% year-on-year. Footfall across the company’s properties increased by 0.7%, compared with a national benchmark of -0.3%.

Key Performance Drivers

Health & beauty and clothing were the strongest-performing categories, with total sales increasing by 13% and 5%, respectively. The company noted that four of Sephora’s six new UK stores opened in Landsec destinations over the past 12 months. Leisure and hospitality also saw 6.2% sales growth, which the company stated played a key role in increasing customer dwell times and supporting overall retail spending.

Company Outlook

Bruce Findlay, Managing Director of Retail at Landsec, said that consumers continue to seek destinations that combine a wide selection of brands with experiences. “This was certainly true during the Golden Quarter with sales and footfall for prime retail once again ahead of the wider market,” Findlay stated. He attributed the performance to the company’s ability to combine its reach of one in four UK consumers with data insights to attract brands and drive sales. “Alongside a strong leisure and hospitality offer, we provide compelling, experience-led retail environments, positioning us well for continued success as we look ahead to 2026,” he added.
