The project will connect the twin cities of Görlitz, Germany, and Zgorzelec, Poland, with a twelve-kilometer pipeline. The goal is to supply both communities with climate-neutral heat generated from renewable sources, including solar thermal energy, biomass, and waste heat recovery.
The new infrastructure is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 50,000 tons annually starting in 2030.
The total investment for the project is estimated at up to 195 million euros.
It is supported by significant funding, including 38 million euros committed by the European Union and an additional 81.6 million euros from the German federal government for investments on its side of the border. The joint venture, which brings together partners E.ON, Stadtwerke Görlitz, and Veolia Germany, is now subject to approval from antitrust authorities.
