LONDON, United Kingdom — Hikma Pharmaceuticals PLC today launched Glucentra (semaglutide) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The product is the first generic version of Ozempic available to patients in the country.
The launch aims to increase access to affordable semaglutide alternatives for patients in Saudi Arabia, Hikma Pharmaceuticals PLC said in an emailed press release today. Hikma is the exclusive commercialization partner for Glucentra across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
Market Access
OneSource Speciality Pharma Limited secured Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) approval for its generic semaglutide earlier this year. This approval enabled the commercialization of the product in Saudi Arabia. Commercial availability of Glucentra in other MENA markets depends on local regulatory approvals.
Hikma is the largest pharmaceutical company in MENA by sales. It has an extensive commercial reach and established institutional relationships throughout the region.
About Glucentra
Glucentra is a prescription medication containing semaglutide. This active ingredient is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It is primarily prescribed to adults with type 2 diabetes.
Patients use Glucentra alongside diet and exercise to lower and stabilize blood sugar levels. It is clinically indicated to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks or strokes, in high-risk individuals. It can be used as monotherapy when metformin is inappropriate due to intolerance or contraindications. It can also be used in addition to other medicinal products for diabetes treatment.
