• SAP and Fresenius Announce Strategic Partnership to Advance AI in Healthcare
BAD HOMBURG, Germany – Fresenius and SAP announced on January 19 their intention to form a strategic partnership to accelerate the digitalization of healthcare.
The collaboration plans to create an AI-supported digital platform for medical facilities, with both companies intending to invest a mid three-digit million euro amount in the medium term.
What is new?
German firms SAP and Fresenius have announced plans to enter a strategic partnership to build a digital backbone for a sovereign, interoperable, and AI-supported healthcare system. The collaboration intends to combine Fresenius’s healthcare expertise with SAP’s technologies to meet high requirements for data sovereignty, security, and regulatory compliance. The companies plan to jointly invest a mid three-digit million euro amount in the medium term to drive the digital transformation of the German and European healthcare systems.
Strategic Goals
The planned partnership aims to create an open, integrated, and data-driven digital health ecosystem that allows hospitals and medical facilities to securely use AI and responsibly handle health data. The companies intend to set new standards for digital innovation in the healthcare sector, with a focus on increasing quality, transparency, and efficiency across the entire care chain.
“Together with SAP, we can accelerate the digital transformation of the German and European healthcare systems and enable a sovereign European solution that is so important in today’s global landscape,” said Michael Sen, CEO of Fresenius. Christian Klein, CEO of SAP, added, “With SAP’s leading technology and Fresenius’ deep healthcare expertise, we aim to create a sovereign, interoperable healthcare platform for Fresenius worldwide.”
Technical Foundation
The foundation for the new platform will be built on SAP technologies and products including SAP Business Suite, SAP Business Data Cloud (SAP BDC), SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), and SAP Business AI. This technology stack is intended to create a unified and compliant base for the secure exchange of data and the operation of AI models.
The project will also support the integration of modern hospital information systems (HIS) based on SAP’s “AnyEMR” strategy, using open industry standards like HL7 FHIR to connect electronic medical records and other applications.
