• UPDATE: DEME Secures Marine Works Contracts in Italy and Spain for Coastal and Event Projects
BRUSSELS, Belgium – The Dredging & Infra segment of DEME has secured two marine works contracts in Southern Europe for environmental remediation and coastal protection. The projects involve site preparations for the 38th America’s Cup in Italy and a large-scale beach restoration in Spain.
What is new?
DEME announced it will undertake two significant marine projects in Southern Europe.
In Italy, the company will perform marine works in Naples connected to the 38th America’s Cup sailing competition. In Spain, DEME has been awarded a contract to restore three beaches along the Valencian coastline through a major nourishment project aimed at combating long-term erosion.
Project Details: Italy
The project in the Bay of Naples focuses on the remediation and redevelopment of the Bagnoli–Coroglio industrial area. A consortium of DEME with Italian firms Savarese Costruzioni and Iterga Costruzioni Generali will execute the marine works. The scope includes the construction of 900 meters of offshore breakwaters, the removal of approximately 130,000 cubic meters of sediments, and the demolition of a decaying central pier and former steel plant service buildings. Substantial completion is scheduled by next summer to facilitate urban regeneration and preparations for the America’s Cup preliminary regattas.
Project Details: Spain
In a joint venture with Rover Maritime, DEME will conduct a beach nourishment project in Valencia, awarded by the Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO). The work aims to restore and protect the popular beaches of Sagunto, Sueca, and Cullera, which have experienced severe erosion. The project involves dredging and placing approximately 3 million cubic meters of sand using DEME’s trailing suction hopper dredger, the Bonny River. Additional measures, such as dune restoration and the construction of new groins, are planned to ensure long-term coastal stability.
Strategic Importance
Jan Vandenbroeck, DEME’s Area Director for South Europe, stated that the two contracts “underscore DEME’s commitment to delivering sustainable, innovative solutions to complex marine challenges.” He noted the projects support both the “legendary America’s Cup and safeguarding natural heritage.” Vandenbroeck added that the work strengthens DEME’s position in the Mediterranean, where the company “continues to partner with local stakeholders to deliver high impact projects.”
