- Domestic Flights Continue to Decline
WIESBADEN, Germany – International air travel from Germany saw a notable increase during the 2025 summer season, though overall passenger numbers have not yet returned to pre-pandemic highs, according to data released Monday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
The report also highlighted a continued and significant slump in domestic air traffic.

From April to October 2025, approximately 68.5 million passengers departed from Germany’s main airports for international destinations. This represents a 4.6% increase, or 3.0 million more travelers, compared to the same period in 2024.
However, the figure remains 2.8% below the record numbers of summer 2019, the last travel season before the COVID-19 pandemic caused a major industry downturn.
In a stark contrast, domestic air travel within Germany decreased by 0.7% from the previous year, falling to 5.3 million passengers.
This figure is more than half—54.9% lower—than the level seen in the summer of 2019, indicating a major shift in travel patterns.
Overall, total passenger volume from German airports rose by 4.2% year-over-year to 73.7 million but was still 10.2% short of the 2019 benchmark. The most popular European destinations for travelers from Germany were Spain, Turkey, and Italy.
For intercontinental flights, the United States remained the top destination.
