UPDATE: Eintracht Frankfurt Parts Ways With Head Coach Dino Toppmöller

FRANKFURT, Germany – Eintracht Frankfurt has ended its collaboration with head coach Dino Toppmöller, effective immediately, following a period of declining performance.

U21 coach Dennis Schmitt and U19 coach Alexander Meier will take over the team on an interim basis.

What is new?

Eintracht Frankfurt announced on January 18, 2026, the immediate departure of head coach Dino Toppmöller. The club stated the decision was the result of a comprehensive sporting and structural analysis of recent weeks, which included a review of the team’s first three matches of the new calendar year. The club’s leadership determined that a change was necessary to provide a new impetus for the team.

Management Commentary

Sporting Director Markus Krösche commented on the decision, acknowledging Toppmöller’s professionalism and passion for the club. “Nevertheless, after intensive internal evaluation, we in the sporting management and jointly on the board have come to the conclusion that we need a new sporting impetus due to the declining development in recent weeks,” Krösche said.

Krösche added, “We have so far been unable to sufficiently live up to our claim as Eintracht Frankfurt to stand for dynamic, aggressive, and compact football this season.”

Toppmöller’s Tenure and Departure

Dino Toppmöller took over as head coach for the 2023/24 season, guiding the club through a period of transition. Under his leadership, Eintracht Frankfurt qualified for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League. In the 2024/25 season, he led the team to a third-place finish in the Bundesliga, the best league placement in the club’s history, securing its first-ever qualification for the UEFA Champions League via the league path.

In a departing statement, Toppmöller said, “I would have very much liked to continue working with this team and to continue to face the challenges that are there. But I accept the decision.” He expressed pride in the team’s achievements during his tenure and thanked the players, staff, and board. “It was an honor. I wish Eintracht calmer and, above all, successful times.”

Next Steps

The club has appointed U21 head coach Dennis Schmitt and U19 coach Alexander Meier as an interim coaching team. Schmitt, a licensed football coach, will take the leading role. According to Krösche, this interim solution provides the club with the necessary time to fill the head coach position on a permanent basis. “Dennis Schmitt and Alexander Meier are ready to take responsibility for Eintracht Frankfurt in this challenging situation,” Krösche stated.
