The partnership builds on Airbus UpNext’s recent Cryoprop demonstrator project, designed to test the use of a two-megawatt superconducting motor within electric propulsion systems.

To this end, Airbus entered into a strategic partnership with Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation, the energy division of Toshiba Group. The collaboration is focused on using superconducting technology for hydrogen-powered aircraft—a key element in Airbus’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Advancing Superconducting Technology
Superconducting technology is highly efficient at very low temperatures, which aligns well with hydrogen-powered electric propulsion systems. These systems rely on liquid hydrogen, cooled to -253°C, not only as a fuel but also as a coolant for the electric motor. This cryogenic cooling approach could lead to more efficient energy transmission, minimizing power loss within the aircraft’s electric system.
